The last half of Matthew 2 is a dark and horrific passage. Can you imagine being Mary and Joseph as they flee to Egypt and hear about the hell on earth Herod unleashes in Bethlehem? Why does Matthew want us to know about these events after the birth of Jesus? Where is Jesus in the midst of terror and tragedy? What do these events tell us about who Jesus is and what he came to do?
In this teaching, we explore the dark and terrifying events after the birth of Jesus. In contrast to the insecure and prideful Herod, Jesus is a king who identifies and enters into the pain and suffering of his people.
