Humility, Servanthood, Unity are all marks of a true follower of Jesus. Jesus exemplified this more than anyone in history. In a Roman culture that was steeped in pursuing self-honor, full of overzealous nationalism claiming ‘Nero is Lord,’ through power and oppression and force, Paul writes to a small church in Philippi and shows them a better way. To follow Jesus means to become more humble and more unified. Jesus didn’t promote himself and push his way to the top. He willingly humbled himself, came down the ladder and still draws near to you and me – even in our sin, brokenness, pain, and suffering. This is who we worship.
